As part of the urban development program at Riedberg, there will be a new day care centre. The new centre is being built on a site around 2,400 square metres in size, located near 'Mitte' on Gerhard-Domagk-Strasse. When completed it will offer space for around 90 children. The design for the two storey building is from klaus leber architekten from Darmstadt.
Children, educators and housekeeping staff will share a total of 1,300 square metres of floor space.
The children will be cared for in five groups: three groups are for kindergarten children and two for caring for children under three. The building is to be a solid construction executed to the highest energy efficient passive house standards. There will be a large amount of insulation and a bracket-mounted panel façade.
The first floor is cantilevered over the ground floor to the west.
The ground floor is designed to be barrier-free, i.e. it doesn't have any thresholds.
The covered atrium spaces form a distinctive architectural feature and allow light to flood in from above.
This results in three themed courtyard areas that in part reach the entire height of the building and offer varying play experiences.
The northern atrium, which cuts through the first floor of the building, will be used as installation space.
The central atrium will have a freestanding tree house allowing users to experience the vertical space. The southern courtyard will have climbing ropes.
The ropes will also help to accentuate the vertical space here.
Large windows facing the garden connect the inside and outside spaces with one another.
The garden also has a courtyard feeling to it and provides a sheltered space within the surrounding buildings.
